Current Trend in English Language Teaching
On Saturday, March 4, 2023, English Language Study Program of Universitas Lambung Mangkurat welcomed a guest speaker, Sisilia Setiawati Halimi Ph.D., to discuss the current trends in English language teaching (ELT). Dr. Halimi is an expert in the field of ELT with over 20 years of experience, and she shared her insights on the latest developments in this rapidly-evolving field.
During the talk, Dr. Halimi highlighted several key trends in ELT that are particularly noteworthy. One of the most important trends is the growing emphasis on teaching English for specific purposes (ESP), which involves tailoring language instruction to the needs of specific groups of learners. This could include business professionals or medical students, for example, who need to develop the communication skills necessary to succeed in their chosen field.
Another important trend is the shift towards more communicative language teaching, which emphasizes teaching students to use English in real-life situations and to communicate effectively with native speakers. This approach focuses on developing students’ communication skills, rather than just memorizing grammar rules and vocabulary.
Dr. Halimi also spoke about the increasing use of technology in ELT, such as online platforms for language learning and virtual reality and augmented reality to create immersive language learning experiences. Finally, she highlighted the trend towards global Englishes, recognizing that English is spoken differently around the world and promoting inclusivity and cultural awareness.
The talk was well-attended by students and faculty members at Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, who were eager to learn about the latest developments in ELT. By staying up-to-date with these current trends, educators and learners alike can ensure they are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an increasingly globalized world.
English language teaching (ELT) is a constantly evolving field, and there are always new trends and developments emerging. To get a better understanding of some of the current trends in ELT, we recently spoke with Sisilia Setiawati Halimi Ph.D., an expert in the field of ELT base from Universitas Indonesia.
According to Dr. Halimi, there are several trends in ELT that are particularly noteworthy. One of the most important trends is the growing emphasis on teaching English for specific purposes (ESP). This means tailoring language instruction to the needs of specific groups of learners, such as business professionals or medical students. By doing so, learners are able to develop the communication skills they need to succeed in their chosen field.
Another important trend is the shift towards more communicative language teaching. This approach emphasizes teaching students to use English in real-life situations and to communicate effectively with native speakers, rather than just memorizing grammar rules and vocabulary. By focusing on communication skills, students are able to develop greater fluency and confidence in using English.
In addition to these trends, there is also a greater use of technology in ELT, such as online platforms for language learning and virtual reality and augmented reality to create immersive language learning experiences. Finally, there is a greater focus on global Englishes, recognizing that English is spoken differently around the world and promoting inclusivity and cultural awareness.
As the world becomes increasingly connected, the demand for high-quality English language education continues to grow. By keeping up with these current trends in ELT, educators and learners can stay ahead of the curve and ensure they are equipped with the skills they need to succeed in a globalized world.
