Present Continuous: What’s Happening Now?
π English Grammar Series β Level 1: Beginner (Part 4 of 5)
What’s happening right now? The present continuous (also called present progressive) is the tense of live action β phone calls, live commentary, temporary situations, and even fixed future plans. Formula first: am/is/are + verb-ing.
1. Spelling Rules for Verb-ing
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| Most verbs β add -ing | play β playing, read β reading |
| Verb ending in e β drop the e | write β writing, dance β dancing |
| Short verb (CVC) β double the last letter | run β running, swim β swimming, sit β sitting |
| ie β ying | lie β lying, die β dying |
2. Four Uses
a) Happening right now: Shh! The baby is sleeping. I am talking to you on the phone.
b) Temporary situations (happening these days, but not forever): I am staying with my cousin this week. She is working late these days.
c) Changing / developing situations: The climate is getting warmer. My English is improving!
d) Fixed future plans (arranged already): We are meeting tomorrow at 10. She is flying to Jakarta on Friday.
3. Stative Verbs β The -ing Refusers
Some verbs describe states, not actions, and are (almost) never used in continuous forms. Memorize the main ones:
- Feelings: love, hate, like, prefer, want, need
- Thinking: know, believe, understand, remember, forget, think (= opinion)
- Senses: see, hear, smell, taste
- Possession: have (= own), own, belong
Say I love cats, never I am loving cats. β οΈ But some verbs have two meanings: I think you’re right (opinion β simple) vs I’m thinking about the problem (mental activity β continuous OK!). Same with have: I have a car (own) vs I’m having lunch (eating β action!).
4. “Always” + Continuous = Complaint!
With always/constantly, the continuous expresses irritation: He’s always losing his keys! You’re constantly complaining! Compare with simple present He always loses… (neutral fact).
