Simple Past Tense: Regular and Irregular Verbs

Simple Past Tense: Regular and Irregular Verbs

πŸ“š English Grammar Series β€” Level 1: Beginner (Part 3 of 5)

Want to tell stories about yesterday, last weekend, or your childhood? You need the simple past tense β€” the storyteller’s tense. It has two systems to learn: easy regular verbs (just add -ed) and irregular verbs (which change completely but are used constantly, so they’re worth memorizing).

1. Regular Verbs β€” Spelling Rules for -ed

Rule Example
Most verbs β†’ add -ed walk β†’ walked, play β†’ played
Verb ending in e β†’ add -d only live β†’ lived, dance β†’ danced
Consonant + y β†’ -ied study β†’ studied, cry β†’ cried
Short verb (CVC: consonant-vowel-consonant) β†’ double the last letter stop β†’ stopped, plan β†’ planned, drop β†’ dropped

Pronunciation of -ed (three sounds!): /t/ after voiceless sounds (walked, fixed), /d/ after voiced sounds (played, cleaned), /Ιͺd/ after t/d (wanted, decided).

2. Irregular Verbs β€” The Essential List

These don’t take -ed β€” memorize them in groups. This core list covers ~90% of daily conversation:

Base Past Base Past
go went come came
eat ate drink drank
see saw take took
write wrote speak spoke
buy bought bring brought
have had do did
make made get got
give gave find found
think thought teach taught
be was / were say said

3. Was / Were

I / he / she / it β†’ was, you / we / they β†’ were. I was sick yesterday. They were at the mall. Negatives: wasn’t, weren’t. Questions: Was she happy? Were you there?

4. Negatives and Questions with Did

Use did β€” and the main verb returns to base form (never past form after “did”!):

  • I didn’t go to school yesterday.
  • Did you see the movie? (not “did you saw”!)
  • She didn’t eat breakfast.
  • Where did they go last night?

5. Time Markers β€” Your Best Friends

The simple past loves finished-time words: yesterday, last night/week/month/year, two days ago, in 2020, this morning (if the morning is over!). If you see one, simple past is almost certainly correct. ⚠️ “Ago” always pairs with past: three years ago β€” never with present perfect!

6. Common Mistakes

❌ Did you went there? β†’ βœ… Did you go there?
❌ I didn’t ate. β†’ βœ… I didn’t eat.
❌ She buyed a book. β†’ βœ… She bought a book.
❌ We was happy. β†’ βœ… We were happy.
❌ I have seen him yesterday. β†’ βœ… I saw him yesterday. (finished time = simple past!)

⚑ Quick Practice

🎯 Tip: keep a tiny diary β€” one sentence about your day in the past tense every night: “Today I went…, I ate…, I met…” Small habit, huge payoff.
