Reported Speech: Saying What Others Said

Reported Speech: Saying What Others Said

πŸ“š English Grammar Series β€” Level 2: Intermediate (Part 5 of 5)

She said, “I’m tired.” β†’ She said she was tired. Reported speech (indirect speech) is how we retell what someone said β€” the grammar of storytelling, news reporting, and everyday gossip. The core mechanic is backshift: move the tense one step into the past. But there’s more: questions, commands, and time words all transform too.

1. The Backshift Table

When the reporting verb is in the past (said, told), shift each tense back:

Direct Speech Reported Speech
Present simple: “I like cats.” β†’ She said she liked cats.
Present continuous: “I’m working.” β†’ He said he was working.
Present perfect: “I’ve finished.” β†’ She said she had finished.
Past simple: “I saw him.” β†’ She said she had seen him.
Will: “I’ll call.” β†’ He said he would call.
Can: “I can swim.” β†’ She said she could swim.
Must: “I must go.” β†’ He said he had to go.

No backshift needed when: the statement is still true now (“The earth is round” β†’ He said the earth is round), or you report immediately (“I’m hungry” β†’ He says he’s hungry β€” present reporting verb, no shift!).

2. Said vs Told β€” The Eternal Confusion

  • Say (+ optional “that”, no person): She said (that) she was busy.
  • Tell (+ person, no “that” before them): She told me she was busy. / She told him (that) she was busy.

❌ She said me… / ❌ She told that she… β€” drill this until it’s automatic!

3. Reported Questions β€” They Become Statements!

The word order flattens β€” no more question inversion:

  • Wh-questions: “Where do you live?” β†’ He asked me where I lived. (not “where did I live”!)
  • Yes/no questions: use if/whether β†’ “Are you tired?” β†’ She asked if I was tired.
  • Reporting verbs: asked, wondered, wanted to know β€” She wondered whether I was coming.

4. Reported Commands and Requests

Tell/ask + person + to-infinitive:

  • “Open the door.” β†’ She told me to open the door.
  • “Don’t be late!” β†’ He told us not to be late.
  • “Could you help me?” β†’ She asked me to help her.

5. Time, Place, and Pronoun Shifts

Direct Reported
now then
today / tonight that day / that night
yesterday the day before / the previous day
tomorrow the next day / the following day
here there
this / these that / those

Plus pronouns shift perspective: “I‘ll help you” β†’ He said he‘d help me.

6. Colorful Reporting Verbs

Move beyond “said”: admit, complain, deny, explain, promise, suggest, warn, advise, agree, refuse β€” He admitted (that) he was wrong. She suggested going to the beach. (Note: suggest + gerund!)

7. Common Mistakes

❌ She said me she was tired. β†’ βœ… She said she was tired. / She told me…
❌ He asked where did I live. β†’ βœ… He asked where I lived.
❌ She said she likes cats. β†’ βœ… She said she liked cats.
❌ He told to me to wait. β†’ βœ… He told me to wait.
❌ She asked if was I tired. β†’ βœ… She asked if I was tired.
